There's a moment every smartphone user knows. You're trying to adjust the volume while your phone is in your pocket, so you squeeze the side of the device and hope for the best. Sometimes it works. Sometimes you accidentally screenshot your own pocket. It's a small frustration, but it's the kind of small frustration that, multiplied across ten years of daily life, starts to feel like something was taken from you.
Japanese designers noticed. They never really stopped noticing.
The Flat Screen Bargain We Didn't Read Carefully
When Apple introduced the original iPhone in 2007, it made a trade that seemed obvious at the time: get rid of the physical keyboard, the navigation buttons, the dedicated camera shutter, all of it—and replace them with a single luminous slab of glass that could theoretically do anything. The rest of the industry followed within 18 months. The tactile vocabulary of consumer electronics—the click, the snap, the satisfying resistance of a well-engineered key—was declared obsolete.
Except in Japan, where that declaration landed with considerably less enthusiasm.
Japanese consumers and the engineers who design for them have maintained a stubborn, almost philosophical commitment to physical interaction. Dedicated camera shutter buttons survived on Japanese-market smartphones long after they vanished everywhere else. Mechanical keyboards never stopped being a serious hobby. The country's audiophile community continued to insist that physical volume knobs on amplifiers produced a qualitatively different listening experience than a software slider—and honestly, they weren't wrong.
Now that sensibility is spreading, and the companies carrying it forward are ones you might not expect.
Nothing's Something, Teenage Engineering's Everything
London-based Nothing—whose product philosophy draws heavily from Japanese minimalist hardware culture—made waves with its Phone (2) by doubling down on tactile differentiation at a time when every other Android manufacturer was busy making their devices smoother, flatter, and more glass-like. Meanwhile, Swedish boutique electronics company Teenage Engineering has built an almost cult-like following by designing synthesizers, cameras, and portable consoles that are essentially love letters to the physical interface. Their OP-1 Field synthesizer has more knobs, sliders, and dedicated buttons than most studio mixers. It also costs over $1,800 and routinely sells out.
What both companies share—and what connects them to the broader Japanese design tradition—is a belief that physical controls aren't legacy technology. They're a design language. And that language carries meaning that software simply cannot replicate.
"When you twist a knob, you get immediate resistance feedback," explains the product philosophy behind Teenage Engineering's approach. "You know exactly where you are in a parameter range without looking. That's not nostalgia—that's ergonomics."
Haptics Are Not the Same Thing, and Here's Why
Apple will tell you that Taptic Engine feedback is the modern answer to the button problem. And to be fair, the technology is genuinely impressive—the click you feel when you press the home button on newer iPhones is a carefully engineered illusion, a vibration motor mimicking mechanical resistance so convincingly that most users don't realize there's no physical movement happening.
But Japanese hardware engineers tend to draw a firm distinction between haptic simulation and actual mechanical feedback. The difference isn't just technical—it's experiential. A real button has travel. It has a definitive endpoint. It makes a sound. It engages your proprioceptive sense in a way that a vibration pattern, however sophisticated, doesn't quite replicate.
This is why Sony's professional camera division has never abandoned physical controls, even as the company's consumer electronics have trended toward touchscreen interfaces. The α7 series cameras—built and tuned largely in Japan—feature dedicated exposure dials, custom function buttons, and a joystick for focus point selection that photographers describe as essential to their workflow. These aren't features for people who can't adapt to touchscreens. They're features for people who've thought seriously about what physical interaction actually enables.
The American Market Is Starting to Get It
Something interesting is happening in the US consumer electronics conversation. After years of treating physical buttons as a sign of inferior design—the province of budget Android phones and legacy devices—there's a growing backlash against total touchscreen dependence.
Part of this is safety-driven. Regulators and safety advocates have spent years documenting the cognitive load of touchscreen-only car infotainment systems, which require drivers to look at a screen to adjust climate controls that used to be operable by feel alone. Volvo, under pressure, reversed its all-touchscreen strategy and reintroduced physical controls for core functions. Other automakers are following.
But part of it is something more diffuse—a growing sense that the homogenized glass rectangle has given us everything we asked for and left us strangely unsatisfied. The popularity of mechanical keyboards among US tech workers, the resurgence of film cameras among younger photographers, the way people describe their analog watches with an almost defensive affection—these aren't coincidences. They're signals.
What Tokyo Knows That San Francisco Is Still Learning
Japanese product culture has always treated the physical interaction between a person and an object as a design problem worthy of serious attention. There's a concept in Japanese manufacturing called monozukuri—literally "the art of making things"—that encompasses not just the object itself but the entire experience of using it, including how it feels in your hand, how it responds to your touch, and whether that response creates a sense of quality and intention.
This is why a well-made Japanese pen feels different from a disposable one even before you write with it. It's why Japanese audio equipment has a tactile reputation that transcends its technical specifications. And it's why Japanese hardware designers never fully bought into the idea that removing physical controls was progress.
The irony is that Silicon Valley, which built its identity on disruption and forward momentum, is now playing catch-up to a design philosophy that was never abandoned in the first place. The button didn't die. It just moved to Tokyo and waited.
And now it's coming back—one satisfying click at a time.
