What Happens When You Stop Filling Every Second With Sound
Open your phone right now and count the sounds. The lock screen click. The notification chime. The whoosh when an email sends. The little triumphant ding when your delivery arrives. Now ask yourself: when did you last actually hear any of them?
That's the problem a handful of sound designers, musicians, and audio engineers — many of them moving fluidly between Tokyo and San Francisco — are trying to solve. They've got a word for what's missing from American tech audio, and it doesn't translate cleanly into English. It's ma (間). And understanding it might be the single most underrated shift happening in digital product design right now.
The Concept Nobody in Silicon Valley Wants to Talk About
Ma is a foundational idea in Japanese aesthetics. It describes the meaningful pause — the negative space between notes in music, the breath before a response in conversation, the empty room that makes the occupied one feel significant. It's not nothing. It's structured, intentional nothing.
In traditional Japanese music forms like gagaku or shakuhachi flute compositions, the silences aren't rests in the Western musical sense. They're load-bearing. They carry emotional weight. They tell you how to feel about the note that just ended and the one that's about to begin. Strip them out and the music doesn't just get faster — it loses its meaning entirely.
Koichi Tanabe, a Tokyo-born composer who now splits his time between Kyoto and the Bay Area consulting for tech clients, describes it this way: "American product teams treat audio like decoration. Something you add at the end to make the experience feel more polished. In Japanese music tradition, sound and silence are designed together from the start. You can't separate them."
Tanabe has spent the last several years working with product teams at mid-sized tech companies — he's careful not to name clients — pushing them to rethink their entire approach to in-app audio. The conversations, he says, are often frustrating at first.
"The instinct is always to add. Add a sound here, make this one louder, make sure users know something happened. But that instinct is exactly the problem."
The Notification Arms Race Nobody Asked For
Here's where it gets culturally interesting. American audio branding has, over the past decade, quietly escalated into something resembling a volume war. Streaming platforms compete to have the most recognizable sonic logo. Apps fight for attention with increasingly aggressive notification sounds. Even the subtle UI sounds on major operating systems have trended toward crispness and assertiveness — sounds designed to cut through, to demand acknowledgment.
There's a logic to it. In a world where the average American receives somewhere north of 60 app notifications per day, you need your sound to register. The problem is that everyone is playing the same game, and the result is a kind of audio pollution that users have learned to tune out entirely — or worse, resent.
Maya Reyes, a sound designer based in Austin who studied under Japanese electronic musician and theorist Midori Shintani, puts it bluntly: "We've trained people to feel mild anxiety every time their phone makes a sound. That's not a user experience. That's a trauma response."
Reyes has been developing what she calls a "negative space audio framework" for digital products — a methodology that borrows explicitly from Japanese music production philosophy. The core idea is counterintuitive by American product standards: the most important sounds in your product should be the ones users almost don't notice.
"If someone finishes a task in your app and feels a small sense of calm — not excitement, not celebration, just resolution — you've done something extraordinary. That's ma working."
Spatial Audio and the New Frontier
The timing of this conversation matters. Spatial audio, once a novelty feature in high-end headphones, is now mainstream. Apple's AirPods, Sony's WH-1000XM series, and a wave of competitors have put three-dimensional sound in tens of millions of ears. And the design community is only beginning to understand what that means for UX.
For Tanabe, spatial audio is the moment the ma conversation becomes unavoidable. "In mono or stereo, you can hide a lot. You can fill space with layers and it sounds full. In spatial audio, emptiness is present. You can hear where there's nothing. That changes everything."
Several forward-thinking product teams are starting to take notice. The emerging approach — still rare, but growing — treats spatial audio not as a way to make experiences more immersive in the maximalist sense, but as an opportunity to create breathing room. Sound that exists in a defined space, surrounded by intentional quiet, hits differently than sound that fills every available frequency.

Restraint as a Competitive Advantage
Here's the argument that's starting to land with product leaders who are otherwise skeptical of anything that sounds like philosophy: restraint in audio design is measurably better for user retention.
Reyes points to a pattern she's observed across multiple client engagements. Products with aggressive audio branding see higher initial engagement metrics — sounds get noticed, interactions feel snappy. But over months, users report lower satisfaction and higher rates of notification-disabling. Products with quieter, more considered audio design show slower initial engagement but stronger long-term attachment.
"Loud gets attention once," she says. "Calm builds a relationship."
Tanabe frames it in terms that resonate with anyone who's spent time studying Japanese hospitality culture: "The best host in Japan doesn't make you feel entertained. They make you feel at ease. You leave feeling better than when you arrived, and you're not entirely sure why. That's what great audio UX should do."
The Hard Sell (and Why It's Getting Easier)
Neither Tanabe nor Reyes pretends this is an easy philosophy to sell in an industry that measures everything. Silence doesn't show up in engagement dashboards. Calm doesn't spike your DAU charts. The instinct to fill every moment with something demonstrably happening is baked into how most product teams are evaluated.
But something is shifting. The broader cultural backlash against notification overload — the rise of focus modes, the growing market for digital wellness tools, the genuine mainstream appetite for apps that don't feel like they're constantly yelling — is creating space for a different approach.
And increasingly, the designers and musicians most equipped to articulate that approach are the ones who grew up understanding that silence was never empty to begin with.
The notes matter. The space between them matters more.
